High Level UN Event for Maternal Health
NEW YORK - World leaders gathered at the United Nations to announce $5.3 billion in commitments to save women and children’s lives in developing countries. The meeting, co-chaired by UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and World Bank President Robert Zoellick, marks the culmination of a year’s work by the Taskforce on Innovative Financing for Health Systems and highlighted the need for stronger, better financed health systems.
Maternal health advocate Liya Kebede said "I'm calling on other developing nations to take up this challenge. Make maternal health a national priority. Recognize that mothers' health is at the center of your health systems and at the heart of your nation. Whether you are from a developed or developing nation, you have a role to play.
Accomplishments of the meeting:
The UK, Norway and Australia announced $1 billion for health system development.
Six CEOS from the tourism and travel industry launched the Massive Good initiative to raise over $3 billion by 2015.
Nepal, Malawi, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone pledged to expand health care services to more than 10 million more people.
